Takudzwanashe Chivandire’s Journey from Zimbabwe to India for Kidney Cancer Surgery

Patient Name:Takudzwanashe Chivandire
Age:59 years
Gender:Male
Country of Origin:Zimbabwe
Condition/Diagnosis:Kidney Cancer
Treatment/Surgery:Kidney Cancer Surgery with HoLEP
For Takudzwanashe Chivandire from Zimbabwe, being told that he needed treatment for kidney cancer brought a lot of uncertainty. At 59, he had already built a familiar routine around his family and everyday responsibilities, and suddenly much of his attention was directed toward medical reports, consultations, and decisions about surgery.
Takudzwanashe and his family began exploring treatment options outside Zimbabwe. India became part of their search as they looked for specialised cancer and urological care. His medical reports and investigations were reviewed before travelling so the treatment team could understand his situation and discuss the next steps with him.
The treatment plan included kidney cancer surgery and HoLEP. For Takudzwanashe, understanding the different parts of his treatment was important. He wanted to know why the procedures had been recommended, what preparation would be required, and how the hospital stay and recovery might affect his routine.
Making the journey from Zimbabwe to India was a decision he discussed carefully with his family. Travelling abroad for medical treatment meant dealing with unfamiliar surroundings at a time when he was already processing a cancer diagnosis. Once he arrived at India Cancer Surgery Site’s associated treatment facility in India, the consultations and pre-operative assessments helped him become more familiar with the process.
The period before surgery was understandably tense. Even after discussing the procedure with his doctors, knowing that the operation was approaching brought nervousness. His family remained close and helped him stay focused rather than becoming consumed by worry.
After treatment, recovery became a matter of taking things gradually. Takudzwanashe concentrated on resting, following medical instructions, attending follow-up appointments, and allowing himself time to regain his strength. He understood that returning to his usual routine would not necessarily happen immediately.
Having family support nearby made the experience easier to handle. They were there during consultations, waiting periods, and the quieter days of recovery, giving him a familiar source of encouragement while he was away from Zimbabwe.
Looking back on the entire experience, Takudzwanashe felt that each stage had required a different kind of patience. The initial diagnosis brought uncertainty, travelling required planning, surgery demanded courage, and recovery required him to slow down and focus on his own wellbeing.
Looking back on his experience, Takudzwanashe said:
“My first reaction to the diagnosis was simply to wonder what would happen next. I had to think about the treatment, the travel, and how everything would affect my family. Before coming to India, I wanted to be certain that I understood the plan, especially because more than one procedure was involved. Once I had spoken with the doctors, I felt better prepared. The recovery period taught me not to rush myself. I focused on getting through each appointment and each day, with my family giving me encouragement along the way.”
