Akaliza Niyomungeri’s Journey from Rwanda to India for Ameloblastoma Surgery

Patient Name:Akaliza Niyomungeri
Age:36 years
Gender:Female
Country of Origin:Rwanda
Condition/Diagnosis:Ameloblastoma of the Jaw
Treatment/Surgery:Ameloblastoma Surgery
For Akaliza Niyomungeri from Rwanda, what began as a health concern gradually became something that needed proper specialist attention. Being told that she had an ameloblastoma, a tumour that commonly develops in the jaw, left her with more questions than answers. She wanted to understand the condition, what treatment would involve, and whether surgery could help her move forward with greater confidence. Ameloblastoma is usually benign but can grow into the jaw and surrounding tissue, which is why surgical treatment is commonly considered.
Akaliza and her family began exploring treatment options outside Rwanda. During their search, India emerged as a possible destination for specialised surgical care. Her medical reports and imaging were reviewed as part of the process, allowing the treating team to better understand the tumour and discuss the treatment approach with her.
For Akaliza, the hardest part was not simply deciding to have surgery. She also had to prepare herself emotionally for the possibility of a procedure involving the jaw. Questions about the operation, recovery, eating, speaking, and returning to normal activities naturally became part of her conversations with the medical team. Treatment of ameloblastoma can sometimes involve removal of affected jawbone and, depending on the case, reconstruction.
Travelling from Rwanda to India added another dimension to the experience. Akaliza was leaving behind her usual surroundings at a time when she was already dealing with uncertainty about her health. Once she arrived at India Cancer Surgery Site, the consultations and necessary investigations helped her become more familiar with the treatment plan.
The day of surgery brought its own emotions. After spending so much time thinking about the procedure, actually entering the operating room made everything feel real. Her family waited for updates and remained close during those uncertain hours.
Recovery then became a gradual process. Akaliza followed the guidance provided by the medical team and allowed herself time to adjust after the operation. Instead of thinking about the entire recovery at once, she focused on the next step—resting, attending follow-ups, and slowly returning to her routine.
What made the experience meaningful for her was the combination of specialist care and family support. Being far from Rwanda was not always easy, but having someone beside her helped her feel less alone during the difficult parts of the journey.
For Akaliza, travelling to India represented a carefully considered decision after a worrying diagnosis. The experience gave her an opportunity to address the tumour with specialist surgical care and approach the next stage of her life with renewed confidence.
Looking back on her experience, Akaliza said:
“When I first heard the word ameloblastoma, I did not really know what to expect. My biggest worry was how the treatment would affect my face and my normal life. I had many conversations with my family before deciding to travel, because going to another country for surgery was not a small decision. Once I met the medical team and understood the plan, I felt more prepared. The recovery needed patience, especially in the beginning, but having my family nearby helped me stay calm and focus on getting through one day at a time.”
