Chisomo Kalua’s Journey from Malawi to India for Robotic Radical Prostatectomy

Patient Name:Chisomo Kalua
Age:52 years
Gender:Male
Country of Origin:Malawi
Condition/Diagnosis:Localized Prostate Cancer
Treatment/Surgery:Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
At 52, Chisomo Kalua from Malawi was not expecting to find himself planning an international medical journey. The diagnosis of prostate cancer changed that. Instead of continuing with uncertainty, he and his family began looking into treatment options and specialist care that could offer a clear path forward.
As they explored medical treatment in India, they learned more about robotic radical prostatectomy and the role of robotic technology in prostate surgery. Before travelling, Chisomo’s medical reports and investigations were shared with the treating team so that his case could be reviewed and the surgical approach discussed.
There were practical concerns, of course, but the emotional side was just as important. Chisomo wanted to know what surgery would actually be like, how long recovery might take, and what he would need to change afterwards. He also had to come to terms with the fact that his treatment would take him far away from Malawi.
Once he arrived in India, the consultations and pre-operative evaluations helped put structure around the process. Rather than having everything happen at once, Chisomo could take time to meet the medical team, complete the required investigations, and understand what would happen on the day of surgery.
The operation itself was the moment he had been thinking about throughout the entire journey. Despite having spoken with the doctors and prepared himself, there was still understandable nervousness before the procedure. His family waited nearby, sharing the same mixture of concern and hope.
After the robotic radical prostatectomy, recovery became the next challenge. Chisomo focused on following the instructions given by the medical team and allowing himself time to recover instead of expecting immediate results. The early days involved rest, follow-up care, and adjusting to the normal limitations that can come after surgery.
What helped him most was having his family involved. Being away from Malawi could have made the experience feel isolating, but having someone beside him made the unfamiliar surroundings easier to manage.
For Chisomo, the journey was about making an important decision after a difficult diagnosis. From the first discussions about treatment to travelling to India and then working through recovery, each stage required a different kind of courage and patience.
Looking back on his experience, Chisomo said:
“The diagnosis made me realise how quickly life can change. At first, I was thinking about the cancer itself, but soon I had to start thinking about treatment, travel and what surgery would mean for my daily life. Coming to India gave me the opportunity to sit with the doctors and understand the procedure properly before making the final decision. I was nervous when the surgery day arrived, but afterwards I felt that I could finally concentrate on getting better. The support from my family was something I valued throughout the entire experience.”
